I am delighted with the decision to allocate the UK's Commission Candidate, Lord Hill, the portfolio of Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union in the next European Commission.
Jonathan Hill brings with him skills honed in the House of Lords of building consensus. These skills will serve him well in the European Union, and in the important economic role he has been given. This is a serious job for a competent man.
Effectively financial services are not just a concern of the City of London, but for the health of the economy of Europe. We look forward to working with Lord Hill to deliver his priority of stable and well-regulated financial markets.
It is a strong signal that a commissioner from a non-Eurozone member state can play a leading role in the commission's economic team and ensure that the Eurozone countries will not dominate the EU Economy.
